The main goal of Plant Genetics and Production Engineering is the application of the principles of Crop science and Genetics to the production of food products. In this discipline, students acquire scientific and practical information in two strategic areas of agricultural science included plant production and Breeding. At the undergraduate level, the department offers a general program in plant production and Genetics with an emphasis on teaching the basics of plant breeding and biotechnology. The graduate program is programmed in Genetics and Plant breeding at the master level. Plant breeding is the genetically purposeful manipulation of plants to create new plant varieties with a set of desired characteristics. The role of Plant Breeding is very important for ensuring food security by developing new varieties that are higher-yielding, resistant to pests and diseases, drought-resistant or regionally adapted to different environments and growing conditions.
It should be noted that seed production plays a vital role in the development of sustainable agriculture. Therefore, due to the province's need to educate and train experts in this main field of agriculture, the Department established in 2010 with three members specializing in plant breeding. Then in 2012, a master's program in Genetics and Plant Breeding was established with admission of three students. The Department has currently four faculty members with specialties in Plant Breeding and Agronomy.
At present, Department has plant breeding, molecular laboratories, greenhouse and Research Farm. The main goals of graduate programs are to train students for professional careers enabling them to manage research programs in the area of classical and molecular breeding.
Research Area
Iran is located in an arid and semi-arid region. On the other hand, Bushehr province is one of the low rainfall provinces in the country. This region with an average rainfall of 246 mm is divided into provinces with high water stress. Therefore, a considerable part of research in the Plant Genetics and Production Engineering Department is oriented toward crop production under water limitations and other abiotic stresses.
