Department of Plant Protection
History and Mission
Plant Protection refers to a field which contains a collection of information from science and technology in the fields of identifying pests and plant pathogens and the principles and methods of control of these factors.
The title "Plant Protection" has been introduced since 1963 instead of "Pest Control and Plant Protection" in Iranian Agricultural Sciences. The Plant Protection is one of the new areas of human knowledge which is the combination of various sciences, and in comparison with medical science that deals with human health, this knowledge checks the health of plants. By this interpretation, Plant Protection is a knowledge about the physician of plants and a plant protector is a person who controls the pests, plant diseases and weeds.
The Department of Plant Protection of Persian Gulf University accepted undergraduate students in 2015. The department consists of two sections: Plant Pathology and Agricultural Entomology with three faculty members. The Plant Protection Department has two educational laboratories of entomology and plant pathology equipped with suitable facilities for laboratory courses.
Objectives
The purpose of this field is to train committed and specialized human resources who can use their knowledge and experience to control the pests and plant pathogens scientifically. These experts should be able to maximum use of the existed facilities to reduce the damage caused by the mentioned factors. Also serve as executive research expert in agricultural research centers and director and executor of plant protection in related public and private institutions.
Perspective
Ensuring food security and production of organic products with reducing the use of chemical pesticides.
Activity areas
- Developing pest and disease resistant cultivars (in cooperating with the Department of Production Engineering and Plant Genetic)
- Biological control of pests and plant diseases
- Production of biofertilizers and biopesticides
