Horticultural science is defined as a collection of knowledge, art and profession of planting, caring, harvesting, postharvest and marketing techniques of various types of flowers and ornamental plants, fruits, vegetables, medicinal and spice plants. Horticulturist expert works in the line of breeding and improvement of crop production, technology, entrepreneurship and job creation in horticultural crops sector.
Department of horticultural science and engineering in Faculty of Agriculture, Persian Gulf University, consisted of a team of expert professors and active and experienced staff, along with Bachelor and Master students, deal with educational and research activities in three branches including fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants aiming to breed and improve the quality and quantity of horticultural crops. The department offers its experiences and achievements in biochemistry, plant anatomy, botany, plant physiology, genetic and breeding, plant nutrition, plant propagation, horticultural crops postharvest, storage and marketing to researchers and entrepreneurs.

Department of Horticultural science, the first department of the faculty of agriculture of Persian Gulf University, was established in 1995 and at the present time, in addition to undergraduate activities in horticultural science, for having the most master's degree orientations in Persian Gulf University, including "Fruit trees", "Vegetables" and "Ornamental plants", it educates the most graduate students in these three orientations. The department with farms, orchards, greenhouses and equipped laboratories has provided a suitable space for education and research for horticultural science seekers and entrepreneurs.

Strategic areas
All strategic goals of horticultural science and engineering are for empowering and improving the scientific level of graduates and farmers according to new findings and achievements in the direction of entrepreneurship and employment.
The department of Horticultural Science and Engineering has seven specialized faculty members and four laboratory and farm experts and masters to implement the strategic plans of the department.
